Fuel Your Body with Nourishing Winter Foods
We live in a society where we want to mask our body's signals.
- Manipulating our natural pheromones that helps attract partners by dousing ourselves in perfume/cologne
- Aggressively applying deodorant because we smell bad not realizing what the smell could be telling us (could be something serious)
- Botox to stop excessive sweating when that excessive sweat can also be a major sign something is off
When it comes to smell, I get tons of patients that say “natural deodorants don’t work” & that can certainly be the case but how many of you are willing to try before asking yourself if it may be you?
The thing with natural deodorant is, we sometimes gotta do a little work to help it along..
For many who don't know my story, I actually suffered with excessive sweating to the point I would sweat through sweatshirts even with antiperspirant on. It was so embarrassing and I highly considered botox for my underarms. Thankfully at the time I was deathly afraid of needles so I never did, but it sent me down a path of researching why this happens to people.
For me, I realized my body was sending me a signal. Sweat is one of the main detox pathways in our body - it helps remove toxins from the body and when we try to stop that through antiperspirants it can allow these toxins to build up within your lymphatic system. This changed my perspective on sweating completely - I WANTED to sweat but not this much and also not smell, so what do I do?
Our lymphatic system is like our internal filter and many lymph nodes are located around the breast and armpit area. When we stop perspiration, it can back these toxins up into our breast tissue which is dangerous long term. But why does it smell?
Hormonal Imbalance & Body Odor
Did you ever think your excessive body odor could be because of your hormones? Well it’s true! When we are stressed or upset, sweat is released from the apocrine gland & is a breeding ground for bacteria. Notice when you smell the worst -- are you stress sweating?
Menopause or even low estrogen can cause bad body odor (hence why pregnant women tend to smell a little stronger). if you frequently experience hot flashes & increased body temperature -- this can result in many natural deodorants "not working".
Sluggish thyroid, hypothyroidism & even diabetes have been known to cause increased body odor. Diabetes can even cause a more sweet swelling body odor.
Poor Gut Health & Body Odor
Sweating is one of our body's FOUR MAIN WAYS of detoxing.. so when we sweat, we detox!
If you have body odor & you are not having a bowel movement everyday, this is a sign that your body has recirculating toxins!
Overgrowths of bacteria, yeast, parasites, mycotoxins, & viruses can contribute to excess toxicity which HAS to be detoxed, & it majorly gets detoxed through sweat (your skin is your largest detox organ).
Diet & Body Odor
The smell can also come from what we eat, like ultra processed foods, greasy food, fried food and even healthy foods like onions, garlic etc. What goes in must come out, but that’s what deodorant is for in those cases.
Food that can contribute to foul body odor include:
- Alcohol
- Fried foods
- Highly processed foods
- Cruciferous veggies (especially with SIBO)
- Garlic
- Spicy food
Foods that help to eliminate foul body odor include:
- Chlorophyll
- High fiber foods
- Cilantro
- Parsley
How to Detox Your Pits
If you are someone who has been on antiperspirants for years, or you are already using natural deodorants but feel like you need a little extra help keeping the smell away, it may be helpful to start with an armpit detox.
Step 1:
Ditch the aluminum deodorant, clean up your diet & start focusing on gut health. The best time to ditch your conventional deodorant is in the winter when you are sweating less.
Step 2:
Find a deodorant that is natural that you want to commit to. A deodorant with baking soda will be the strongest alternative but it can cause irritation for some. Since there are so many here is a short cheat sheet of the ones I’ve tried and true tested & liked!
Rowe Casa Organics Deodorant Sticks neutralize odor by eliminating bad bacteria all while soothing the skin and keeping you smelling fresh. The scented options are formulated with 100% pure, therapeutic grade essential oils, or you can opt for an unscented version!
Step 3:
Do nightly bentonite clay armpit masks to help pull toxins while cleaning up your diet & transitioning off toxic deodorant. This is usually done with a bentonite clay, a little apple cider vinegar and water, mix into a paste and lather onto your armpits for 10 minutes a night for 7-10 days. Conventional deodorants clog pores & lymph so it all needs to be released. Allow 1-3 months for this process.
Pro-Tips for Natural Deodorants
Apply silver gel before deodorant to kill any bacteria that can create odor, silver might be all you need to keep the smell away!
- Give yourself time to detox after years of antiperspirants and toxic deodorants
- If you notice a rash, look at the ingredients – some may contain baking soda and that can be irritating to the skin
- Wait a few minutes after applying to put on clothes to avoid staining
- Consider getting a stool test or mycotox profile and work on opening your drainage pathways! Many times overload of these pathogens can lead to body odor
